Is the mop a thing of the past? Did you know the mop used to be spelled ‘Mappe’ and was first attested in England as early as 1496 but as longstanding as it may be, the humble mop has its limitations.
The dry mop has limit on the amount of dirt it will retain and the moist mop results in extra labour and poor performance issues and if your mop isn’t washed and dried daily you’ll have a problem with spreading bacteria and contamination. A study in 2006 showed that food left in contact with the floor for only 60 seconds had ten times the level of bacteria on it than you would expect and as we’re becoming wiser to this and technology advances, we wonder if the mop will soon become a thing of the past.
Scrubber dryers first introduced in 1956 have been known to be big and heavy with no consideration given to water usage, power consumption, speed or ergonomics but now thanks to technology we have micro scrubber dryers now that address all of these issues and are more hygienic to use as the spread of bacteria is minimal due to the machine cleaning constantly with clean water and quick drying brushes.
Scrubber dryers can be used on carpets and hard floors, can go forwards and backwards, underneath furniture and in narrow spaces and are better for your health.
The answer still remains to be seen if the mop will stay but whilst it does the risk of infection will also remain high.
