Did you know that October 15th is Global Handwashing Day with more than 200 million people in over 100 countries taking part and promoting handwashing with soap as an easy, effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
First held in 2008, Global Handwashing Day is designed to support a global and local handwashing culture and shine a spotlight on the state of handwashing worldwide, raising awareness about the benefits of washing your hands.
The day is endorsed by a wide array of governments, international institutions, private companies and individuals and this year’s theme is ‘Make Handwashing a Habit’.
To be effective, hand hygiene needs to occur regularly at key times throughout the day such as before and after preparing food, after petting an animal and after using the toilet etc.
Primary schools in the UK are asked this year to inspire their students to become ‘Hand Washing Champions’ with activities and lessons aimed at making hand washing fun, engaging and memorable as if children are encouraged from an early age that washing their hands is part of their school day it will help ensure that this practice becomes part of their lifelong routine.
Is your child’s school taking part this week and what can you do to take part this weekend, we’d love to hear how you’ll be taking part this year.
